How to align your career with your core values

Hello, fellow soul leader,

Ever feel like your career doesn’t quite match who you are at your core?

Like you’re wearing a costume that doesn’t fit? It’s not uncommon, especially in creative and fast-paced industries like marketing, music, theatre, film, and TV.

Aligning your career with your core values isn’t just about job satisfaction—it’s about creating a life that feels authentic, fulfilling, and purpose-driven.

Grab a cup of tea, and let’s chat about how you can make your career reflect what truly matters to you.

1. What Are Core Values and Why Do They Matter?

Core values are the guiding principles that shape your decisions, actions, and sense of purpose.

Think of them as your internal compass, pointing you toward what feels right and meaningful in life.

In industries like music and entertainment, where creativity and deadlines collide, it’s easy to lose sight of your values.

But here’s the thing—when your career aligns with your core values, you’ll feel:

👍 More motivated to tackle challenges.

👍 Less stressed because you’re not fighting against yourself.

👍 Truly fulfilled, knowing your work has purpose.

Action Tip: Take 10 minutes to write down your top five values.

Need inspiration?

Think about what makes you happiest, what you stand for, or what you’d fight to protect.

2. Recognise the Signs of Misalignment

Sometimes, it’s not obvious that your career and values are out of sync.

Here are some red flags to watch for:

👎 You dread going to work, even for projects you once loved.

👎 You feel like you’re compromising your ethics or creativity.

👎 You’re constantly exhausted or uninspired.

Ask Yourself: Does my current role allow me to express my core values?

If the answer is no, it might be time for a change.

3. Define Your Career Vision Around Your Core Values

Once you’ve identified your values, the next step is to align them with your career goals.

Picture your ideal workday:

  1. What are you doing?

  2. Who are you working with?

  3. How do you feel?

For example:

💡 If creativity is a core value, you might thrive in a role that lets you innovate or experiment.

💡 If integrity is crucial, you’ll want to work for a company that shares your ethical standards.

💡 If connection drives you, choose roles that involve collaboration or building relationships.

Action Tip: Create a “Career Vision Board.” Include visuals, quotes, and goals that reflect your values and aspirations.

4. Make Small, Value-Driven Changes

You don’t have to overhaul your career overnight.

Start small by making value-driven decisions in your current role. For example:

✅ Advocate for projects that align with your passions.

✅ Set boundaries to protect your time and energy.

✅ Seek mentorship or networking opportunities that resonate with your goals.

Small shifts can lead to big changes over time.

Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.

5. Build a Supportive Network

Surrounding yourself with like-minded professionals can make all the difference.

Whether it’s a mentor, a peer group, or an online community, having support helps you stay true to your values.

In industries like marketing and entertainment, networking isn’t just about finding jobs—it’s about finding your people.

Action Tip: Join industry-specific groups or attend events where you can connect with individuals who share your values and vision.

Aligning your career with your core values is a journey, not a one-time decision.

It’s about tuning into what matters most to you and making intentional choices that reflect your authentic self.

Whether you’re a new manager or a seasoned professional, taking steps toward alignment can transform not just your career, but your entire life.
